Wings lose game two, successful season comes to a close.... Posted August 3rd, 2008

The Wings last night dropped game two of the best of three Divisional Playoff Series 6-1 to the Brockport Riverbats. With the loss the Wings 2008 season comes to an abrupt halt. The Wings knew the situation going into last night's game and knew they had to get things going against the 'Bats pitching early. The Wings would score first when John Sills (Holy Cross) would start the game with a solid hit to center, and then would advance on a passed ball and fielder's choice. Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) would then drive Sills on a base hit to left. The Wings looke like they were in business and it looked like they may have the 'Bats pitcher's number on the night, but those two hits were the only hits allowed by Brockport pitching the rest of the night. The Wings pitchers tried their best to hold Brockport back and with the series on the line all arms were available on the night. The Wings sent a total of 6 pitchers to the mound and the group combined to allow only 6 hits among them. Kris Mengle (George Mason) would get the start and take the loss on the night, and Kyle Eastham (South Florida) would keep his 0.00 ERA in tact striking out 3 in his 2 innings pitched. In the end the Riverbats would get the best of the Wings on the night and in the series. The Wings season ends and the Riverbats will now take on the winner of the Allegany County/ Hornell series which is tied at one game a piece.

Post-seaon All-Stars will be chosen in the next few weeks. We will post the list of All-Stars once the awards have been press released. In the mean time here are some statistics to keep you busy. Out of 14 teams in the NYCBL the Wings, as a team, ranked very high in several categories: 1st in batting (.292), 1st in Doubles (84, the next closest was 69!), 3rd in ERA (3.00), and 1st in earned runs allowed (111). Individual marks were also set this year by a number of players. Matt Perry (Holy Cross) won the league batting title, batting a softball like .427 on the season, including leading the league in hits (61). Perry would also finish in 2nd place with 13 doubles, 3rd in the league in slugging at .538 and 3rd in the RBI chase with 29. Within that .427 batting average Perry went on a 27 game hitting streak which now stands as the new NYCBL record. Speaking of records, Kyle Eastham (South Florida) tied a Red Wing and NYCBL record posting a perfect 0.00 ERA on the season. This the second year in a row the Wings have had a pitcher with 0.00 ERA, Eastham now shares that perfect mark with Kyle Bellamy (Miami) of the 2007 Wings team. Other highlights of the seaon included a 21 game hitting streak by John Sills (Holy Cross), which at the time was a new Red Wing record. The record stood for about two weeks before Perry would break it, and take it from his Crusader teammate. Ryan Uphouse (George Mason) would finish second in the league, tied with teammate Perry, with 13 doubles.

This morning our players begin the task of packing up and travelling home and will be returning to their respective schools in the next few weeks to start their Fall seasons. It's never easy ending the season on a loss in the playoffs and saying good bye to a bunch of terrific guys that we have come to know over the past 2 months. Especially after the successful seasons our players had. But...baseball will return to McDonough park in June 2009 and we will do this all over again. Hope springs eternal and so does baseball. The Red Wing Staff would like to thank all of our players for the contirbutions they have made to this organization ad community and wish them luck as they return to their respective schools. Thank you guys for everything you have done this summer and the effort you put forth everyday....and remember as we say around here, "Once a Wing, Always a Wing"!

Wings lose game one, must win tonight.... Posted August 2nd, 2008

The Wings dropped game one of the best of three divisional series last night in Brockport by a score of 6-1, putting the Wings ina 1-0 deficit in the best of three series. There are no box scores posted so we do not have a game story yet, we will get one posted as soon as information is avialable.

The Wings host the Riverbats tonight at McDonough Park at 7:30. This is game two of the three game set and a must win game for the Wings in the short series. The Wings are 1st in the league in hitting, 3rd in ERA, and the 2008 Wings have never been a roll-over team, so the boys aren't out of this yet. Come on out tonight and help your 2008 Wings push on to the Championship.

League Office cancels Thursday's games, playoffs start Saturday... Posted July 30th, 2008

With the playoffs looming and the fact that the games originally scheduled for Thursday (today) no longer matter in the playoff race, the decision was made early this morning to cancel those remaining games. That results in a final record for the Wings of 21-17, and third place in the Western Division. The Wings will now play the Brockport Riverbats (27-15) in a best of three Divisional Playoff Series. The series will begin tomorrow, Friday, at Brockport at 3:00. Game Two will be at McDonough Park at 7:30 on Saturday, and if needed Game 3 will be at Brockport on Sunday at 3:00.

Wings rained out at Allegany.... Posted July 29th, 2008

The Wings have been rained out tonight at Allegany County tonight. The next home game will be Saturday August 2nd against the Brockport Ribverbats in game two of the best of 3 Divisional Playoff series. The Wings will play Brockport in Brockport on Friday at 5:00PM for game one.

Wings clinch playoff spot with sweep of DH at Niagara... Posted July 29th, 2008

The Wings clinched a playoff spot with a 16-1 and 4-3 sweep of the Niagara Falls Power at Sal Maglie Field last night. In the first game the Wings pounded out 19 hits in a 16-1 drubbing of the Power. The 2,3,4,5 hitters in the order went 13-20 with 9 RBI and 8 runs scored. Matt Perry (Holy Cross) led that group going 5-6 at the plate with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI. Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) was 3-5 with 3 RBI including a two run home run, his second home run in as many nights. Doug Elliot (UConn) was 2-5, and John Sills (Holy Cross) finshed at 3-5 with an RBI and 2 stolen bases. Aaron Greenblatt (Northeastern) earned the win allowing one hit and five walks in five innnings pitched. Brett Stackhouse (Gardner-Webb) would hold the game striking out 4 in the final two frames. The second game started the way the first finished. The Wings would jump out to a quick 4-0 lead after three. Will Harford (Notre Dame) and Ryan Uphouse (George Mason) would go 2-4 with a double each, and Jimmy Vahalik (Toledo) would lead the hitters in the second game with a 3-4 peformance and a run scored. The Power would amke it interesting though. In the ninth with the score 4-2 they would get the winning run to the plate. The Power would plate one run in the ninth, the final batter with runners on first and third, would line out to Uphouse who would have to make a running grab to save the game on a tailing line drive.

Dodgers take two from Wings.... Posted July 29th, 2008

The Wings and the Dodgers played two last evening at McDonough Park in Geneva. The story of the night was Dodger pitching in both games. The Wings would only scratch out five hits combined in both games. In the first game Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) would hit a solo shot to right scoring the only run for the Wings in a 5-1 loss. The second hit of that game would come with one out in the seventh, the final inning. The Wings would leave the bases loaded with one out in the second as their only real threat. Mike Assmann (Cortland) would take the loss going 6 full innings and allowing 5 hits and 4 walks on the day. In the second game the Wings would be in the same situation, having difficulty reaching the Dodger starting pitching. The Wings would score two in the bottom of the first when Mendiola would drive in Irish teammate Will Harford (Notre Dame) on a double then score himself on an overthrow that came from left center and ended up in the vistor's dugout. The 2-0 lead would be short lived as the Dodgers would score two in the top of the second and take the lead 3-2 in the third. Jimmy Vahalik (Toledo) would add an RBI single in the bottom of the third but that would be as close as thw Wings would get as the Dodgers hung a 4 spot on the board in the 5th, which would end up being the final score 7-3. Dan Rouah (Lynn) took the loss for the Wings as he struggled a bit on the night allowing 9 hits while walking 4. The losses delay the Wings clinching a playoff spot. The Wings magic number remains at one, any combination of a Geneva win or a Webster and Elmira loss clinches a playoff berth for the Wings.

The schedule gets a little crazy the next few days as the start of the playoffs loom on August 1st. The Wings will play two today in Niagara Falls starting at 5:00, then travel to Allegany County for one on Wednesday. The Allegany County game could play a large role in the seeding for the playoffs, as the Wings and Nitros are currently tied for third in the Western Division. On Thursday the Wings will play their final regular season home games at McDonough park as they host the Elimra Pioneers at 1:00 to complete the game which was suspended by lightning on Saturday, then the Niagara Falls Power will stop by McDonough for a 5:00 start. Once all is said and done, the Wings will need one more win to make the playoffs, the way things stand currently they will most likely be playing game 2 of the 3 game series at home on Saturday...but there is alot of baseball left in the next three days (Elmira has a triple header today!) so stay tuned!

Matt Perry's 27 game hit streak snapped... Posted July 28th, 2008

Matt Perry's (Holy Cross) league record 27 game hit streak was snapped last evening in the second game of the doubleheader against Brockport. Perry is currently leading the league in batting at .417 on the season and is also is tied for the league lead in total hits at 55. John Sills, also of Holy Cross, had a 21 game hitting streak of his own earlier in the season. At that time Sills' 21 game streak was a Red Wings record. Perry has since broken that short lived record and surpassed the league record. The Red Wing staff would like to congratulate Matt on reaching such a milestone!

Wings split two, twin bill again this evening... Posted July 28th, 2008

The Wings split a doubleheader last evening against the Brockport Riverbats at McDonough Park last night with a 4-1 win and a 2-0 loss. In the first game all the runs the Wings would need would score in the first inning when, with bases loaded, Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) would hit a bases clearing double making the score 3-0 after one. Charly Bashara (Northeastern) would hold the 'Bats for six strong innings allowing just 5 hits while striking out 9. Brockport would be able to manufacture a run in the fourth, but that would be all they would get against the duo of Bashara and Kyle Eastham (South Florida) who would earn the save with an inning of no hit relief. The Wings would add an insurance run off a Matt Perry (Holy Cross) RBI double in the sixth. Kevin McGrath led all Wings hitters with a 2-3 performance.

In the second game the Wings would muster only 5 hits, that wouldn't be so bad in a low scoring game, but all the hits came in seperate innings. Steve Forster (St. John's) would pitch a solid 6 innings allowing one earned run and six hits. Aaron Brett (Central Missouri) would finish off the final inning striking out one. The pitchers kept the Wings in it, but the batters just couldn't put any hits together in the second game and would drop the contest 2-0. The split increases the Wings lead over the fourth place Nitros to 2 full games, and also reduces the Wings magic number to clinch a playoff spot to one. Any combination of a Wings win or a Webster loss will clinch a playoff berth for the Wings.

The Wings are home again tonight for another doubleheader. Tonight's double header is the second of three doubleheaders in a row! Tonight the Wings host division leading Hornell for a 5:00 start with the second game immediately following. The Wings will then travel to Niagara Falls for, yes, another doubleheader at Sal Malgie field also starting at 5:00. It's playoff time! Come on out to the park and help the boys bring home the Championship this season!

Lightning suspends game in first... Posted July 27th, 2008

Last night's game against the Pioneers was suspended in the first inning because a lingering storm that was producing lightning just would not pass the park. For an hour and a half the game was delayed twice but at 9:35 the game was suspended officially because of lightning. No make up date has been set. The Wings are home today, Sunday July 27th at 3:00 for a doubleheader against the Brockport Riverbats. Tomorrow the Wings will host the Hornell Dodgers for another twin dip starting at 5:00. The Wings are in the midst of a playoff run, come on out and help push them into the post season. It is supposed to be a great day for baseball today...finally!

Big innings bury Pios, Wings gain in standings.... Posted July 26th, 2008

The Wings bouyed by two big innings dropped the Pioneers in Elmira 11-6, improving their record to 18-14 on the season. Aaron Greenblatt (Notheastern) earned the win despite the fact that he struggled with the strike zone, walking 8. The trio of Brett Stackhouse (Garder-Webb), Aaron Brett (Central Missouri), and Jason Koziol (George Mason) kept the Pios at bay. The Wings would hang a few crooked numbers on the board with a 3 run third capped by a two-run homerun by Ryan Uphouse (George Mason) who would go 4-6 on the night with 4 RBI. The Wings would hang a few more on the board to put hemselves safely ahead 11-4 going into the ninth. The Pios would score two in the ninth to make the score look closer than it was, as the Wings had contol of the game throughout. The win last night combined with a Allegany County loss extends the Wings lead over the Nitros for third place by a game and a half. The top four teams in each division make the playoffs, and right now the Wings hold a five game lead on the fifth place Webster Yankees. The magic number for the Wings would be 4. Any combination of Wings wins or Webster losses that equal four will clinch the playoffs for the Wings.

The Wings are right back to business playing the same Elmira Pioneers tonight, home at McDonough Park. First pitch is at 7:30. The Wings remain home on Sunday for a doubleheader against the Brockport Riverbats. First game starts at 3:00.

Rain! No game!.... Posted July 24th, 2008

Something new, rain! Rain has cancelled today's game in Brockport and forced the Wings into another doubleheader on Saturday against the Riverbats at home. The Wings will play six games in three days with doubleheaders on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The start time for for Saturday's games are still to be determined but will be posted on the schedule page when finalized. The Wings travel to Elmira on Friday for a 7:00 start before returning home on Saturday for the doubleheader aginst the Riverbats.
