Will Harford, a member of the 2008 & 2009 Geneva Red Wings has been drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 45th round of the 2010 amateur draft. Will a 2010 graduate of the University of Notre Dame hit .315 for the Wings in 2009, including 11 doubles and a solid .753 OPS. While manning the hot corner for the Wings in 41 of 43 games he was named to the 2009 NYCBL Top Pro Prospects list. Congratulations Will, keep living the dream.
Matt Perry (Holy Cross),a 2008 Wing, has been drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 41st round of the 2010 amateur draft. Perry was a record setter in 2008 winning the NYCBL batting title with a .427 average on a league leading 61 hits. In the process he also set the NYCBL hitting streak record, reaching safely in 27 straight games and 38 of 40 games that season. Congratulations Matt, living the dream!
Two of the 2009 Geneva Red Wings were granted post season honors this past week. The 2009 NYCBL post season All-Star team was named and Dan Pembroke (Dowling College) was named to the 2nd team at 1st Base. Dan played in all 43 games for Wings this past season hitting .285 with a OPS of .853. He drove in 21 batters and broke the Red Wing single season doubles record with 14 wall-bangers. He also anchored the team at first with a .981 fielding percentage.
Will Harford (University of Notre Dame) was listed on the “Top 25 Pro Prospects” list for the NYCBL. Will was listed at #25 for the league. The 6′0″ 180lb. Irish Senior lead the team in average at .315 and hits with 46 including 11 doubles which led to a a solid .753 OPS. He manned the hot corner for the Wings all season playing in 41 of 43 games.

Dusty Odenbach who pitched on the 2007 Red Wings team has signed with the Kansas City Royals after being drafted by the Royals in the 8th round of the MLB Amateur Draft. Dusty has been assigned to the Burlington Royals of the Appalachian League.
Travis Ozga (Florida Atlantic) has been drafted 1241st overall in the 41st Round of the MLB 2009 Amateur Draft by the New York Mets. As a Wing in 2006, Ozga battled injury and only appeared in 21 games. In 62 AB’s Ozga posted a .256 batting average, but showed great promise despite fighting injury.

Dusty Odenbach (University of Connecticut) has been drafted 242nd overall in the 8th Round of the MLB 2009 Amateur Draft as the 7th pick of the Kansas City Royals. Odenbach was 4-0 as a starter on the 2007 team with a 3.17 ERA. In 7 appearances for the Wings he pitched 31.1 innings striking out 39 and allowing just 19 hits. Opposing NYCBL batters hit just .173 against him.

Tim Crabbe (Westmont College, CA) has been drafted 419th overall in the 14th Round of the MLB 2009 Amateur Draft as the 15th pick of the Cincinnati Reds. Crabbe pitched as a reliever for the 2008 Wings racking up a 1.80 ERA in 11 appearances. In 15.0 IP Crabbe struck out 17 and held opposing batters to a .174 average.

Kyle Bellamy (University of Miami) had been drafted in the 5th Round of the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft as the 163rd overall pick and the team’s 7th pick in the draft. Bellamy was named a 2009 All-American pitching as the closer for the Hurricanes this season. In 2009 Bellamy racked up great numbers and is the running for “NCAA Closer of the Year”. Bellamy’s line for 2009 included a 3-1 record with a 0.97 ERA in 30 appearances, working 46.1 innings, and striking out 63 batters in those innings. He saved 16 games for the ‘Canes and held opposing batters to a .147 average.
Bellamy was virtually untouchable as the closer for the Geneva Red Wings in 2007. In that campaign he racked up several records including the NYCBL record for saves at 16. In 17 IP he struck out 27, and allowed only 2 hits and 3 walks, holding opposing batters to a .047 average. He was named to the post season first team NYCBL All-League team. Bellamy sets one more record, two years after his departure from Geneva, he becomes the highest Red Wing draft pick of all time.

The Wings made the trip to Elmira last evening, and waited around for the skies to clear, which never happened, The exhibition against the Pio’s was eventually called due to rain. The Wings wrap up the pre-season with a twin bill exhibition against the ECBL Rome Thunderbolts tonight at McDonough Park. First pitch in the first game is slated for 5:00, and the second game start is immediately following the first. This is the first game that can be heard live, on our new partner station, on 105.7 WHWS.
The Wings have an off day on Wednesday to prepare for the season opener against the Allegany County Nitros. The Nitros will make their first visit to McDonough Park on Thursday, with the first pitch at 7:30. Friday the Pio’s return to McDonough on Little League night. On Friday the 12th all Little Leaguer’s in uniform will receive free admission to the park, all other fans pay only $2 for any seat in the house. First pitch on Friday is at 7:30.

Center Valley, Pa. – The top three teams combined to take all four of the 2009 Patriot League Baseball Major Awards announced on Wednesday, with Army earning two honors and Holy Cross and Bucknell each claiming one award. Holy Cross junior third baseman Matt Perry takes Patriot League Player of the Year honors, while Army sophomore starting pitcher Ben Koenigsfeld was named Pitcher of the Year and freshman second baseman Zach Price claimed the Rookie of the Year award for the Black Knights. Bucknell’s Gene Depew was recognized as Patriot League Coach of the Year for the fourth time. The awards were voted on by the League’s six head coaches, who could not vote for their own team.
Perry becomes Holy Cross’ third Player of the Year honoree, and first since 2001, after leading the Patriot League in batting average, hits and on-base percentage during the 2009 campaign. Perry’s .439 batting average, 75 hits and .505 on-base percentage are all the top marks among League players, and his 111 total bases were tied for the top spot. Perry also led the way by hitting .486 in Patriot League games. He stands third in the League in slugging percentage (.649) while notching seven home runs, 36 RBI and 42 runs scored heading into this weekend’s Patriot League semifinals at Army. Perry batted .486 (34-for-70) with five home runs, 19 RBI and 17 runs scored while leading Holy Cross to an 11-7 Patriot League record. He led or tied for the lead in batting average, hits and on-base percentage (.525) in League games, while placing second in slugging percentage (.786). Perry earned Patriot League Player of the Week honors on April 6 after a big series in a four-game split at Army. The only other Holy Cross student-athletes to earn Player of the Year honors are Jim Sweeney (1999) and Peter Summa (2001).
