The Geneva Red Wings lost to the Utica Blue Sox 12-5 on Monday. Some early pitching struggles for the Red Wings got them in the hole early and from there they were never able to get themselves out.
In the first inning, with the bases loaded, Geneva’s starting pitcher Myles Stearns walked Vincenzo Castronovo for the first run of the game. The Blue Sox then scored another run from a balk. The next batter, Brenton Phillips, grounded out but was able to knock in another run for a 3-0 lead.
Geneva would get those three runs back in the bottom of the 1st, starting with an RBI single by Brandon Cooper. Next, Daniel Sperling grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Noah Fisher from third. A sacrifice fly from Kross Grundy tied the game at three.
In the 2nd, Castronovo singled to score two more for Utica. A single by Phillips then made it a three-run game again.
Utica’s bats remained hot in the 6th, as Josh Hatcher hit a two-run home run. The Sox then executed some smart base running as a double steal brought home Philips from third for a 9-3 lead.
The Wings cut the lead down in the 7th, starting with Brainy Rojas scoring on a wild pitch. An RBI single by Brandon Cooper made it a 9-5 game.
In the top of the 8th, Phillips got on base after a failed attempt at a diving catch by Thursal White in right field. The ball rolled to the wall and Hatcher scored from third.
The Blue Sox would add on even more insurance in the top of the 9th as Gabe Sherman hit an RBI single. Tyler Simon then hit a ball into the gap to score one more. Although, Simon was tagged out trying to stretch a double into a triple after a great throw by the left fielder Grundy.
Geneva’s next game is at Newark on Wednesday.
