Geneva Wows the Crowd Opening Night with a win over Newark!
2 out runs seemed to be the preferred method of production at McDonough Park in Geneva on Friday night. The Red Wings scored three runs in the bottom of the 9th inning (the winning run crossed the plate with 2 outs) to walk off on the Newark Pilots, winning by a final score of 4-3.
Opening Night at McDonough saw the Geneva ball club fall behind 3-0 after the 5th inning. The visiting Pilots manufactured runs in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings.
Through seven innings, Geneva was held scoreless by Newark starter Henry Martinez (5 IP, 6 K, 2 H) and reliever Zach Mann (2 IP, 2 K, 1 H). As the tail end of the Newark bullpen was called on, however, the tides turned in favor of Geneva. 6 walks in the final two innings led to the Wings scoring 4 unanswered runs. A bases loaded walk for Travis Owens opened the scoring for the Geneva club in the bottom of the 8th. They would strand the bases loaded in the 8th, only to load them again in the latter half of the 9th frame. An inning opening error was accompanied by a single by Matt Chamberlain and a walk to 3-hole Langston Livingston to give the Wings a bases loaded, 1 out opportunity, down 3-1. A deep sac fly to right field by Mikey Arman scored Joseph Tassin, and a walk to Trustin Riley on a 3-2 count with 2 outs and the bases loaded tied the ballgame at three. Pinch hitter Garrett Uhl then came to the plate and watched four straight balls to lead Geneva to their first win of the season.
The Red Wings’ starter Brian Reed threw a quality start in his first outing of the summer season. He went 6.0 innings, giving up only two earned runs and collecting 5 strikeouts. A combined shutout effort by bullpen arms Jared Kacso and Garrett Swanson allowed the Wings to hold the Pilots at 3 runs and enable their comeback. Swanson (1-0) earned his first win of the season after throwing a perfect ninth inning. The Red Wings return to play on Saturday, June 3, in Jamestown against the Jammers. They will finish their first weekend set against the Flames at home on Sunday at 4:05 P.M.
