The Geneva Red Wings (7-3) suffered their first defeat at home on Wednesday night at the hands of their division rival, the Newark Pilots.
Newark took a quick 3-0 lead on the Wings in the top of the first inning, which is where things stayed until the bottom of the fourth inning. In the frame, Geneva tied the ballgame with a pair of RBI singles from Jake Evans (Alabama Southern CC) and Jake Lyle (Volunteer State CC). Evans would eventually come around to score on a wild pitch to knot things at 3.
The Red Wings would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from William Hampson (Southwest Tennessee CC). However, Newark would answer with two runs in the next frame to retake the lead. They would keep the lead for the rest of the game.
Newark would add single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to go up by three once again. Geneva would push across a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth inning on a passed ball, but a 5 spot from the Pilots’ lineup in the ninth would prove too detrimental for a Wings comeback. The score ended 12-5 in favor of the Pilots.
Red Wings’ starter Jared Kacso (0-2, NJIT) threw six innings, giving up five and striking out two. He would be slated with the loss on the evening. Relievers Ben Terwilliger and Pat Connor also made appearances in the game. Newark starting pitcher Kyle Griffin (2-1, Louisiana Tech) earned the victory, throwing five innings while giving up four.
Geneva returns to action on Thursday night on the road against the Oneonta Outlaws (2-8). The starting pitcher for the Wings in that contest will be Alex Bellardini (2-0, Youngstown State).
