The Red Wings won a close one in Syracuse on Sunday evening against the Onondaga Flames. When all the dust settled, Geneva was on top 6-4 for their third straight victory.
Red Wings’ starting pitcher Slater O’Brien (St. Joseph’s) worked past some early trouble to cruise to 5 innings of shutout baseball. In that span, he accumulated seven strikeouts, only allowed two hits, and walked one. He would finish the day with a no decision.
A Joseph Tassin (Bossier Parish CC) would push the Red Wings on top 1-0 in the top of the 3rd inning. Justin Etts (NJIT) would score another run for the Wings in the top of the 4th on an E6.
The Flames would tie things up in the bottom of the 6th on an E5 and an RBI single. Geneva would respond with three in the top of the seventh, courtesy of an E6, a Joseph Tassin RBI double, and a balk. A sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the frame would cut the deficit to 5-3. Relief pitcher Andy Reed (1-1, Elmira College) earned the victory in relief for the Wings.
The Flames would tack on one more in the bottom of the 8th, but that would conclude their scoring for the night. Colby Mullins (Andrew College) would come on with runners on first and second with 2 down in the bottom of the 8th with two outs in a one run ballgame. A groundout to short would end the threat.
Geneva would add one more in the 9th, and Mullins kept the score at 6-4 in the bottom half to secure the victory for the Wings.
The Red Wings are now 6-2 on the season, and they will travel to Adirondack to take on the Trailblazers before enjoying an off day on Tuesday. Tomorrow night’s starting pitcher will be Jordan Murphy (UT Dallas).

OTHER NOTES FROM THE GAME:
O’Brien’s five shutout frames extended the streak to 20 consecutive scoreless innings for Geneva starters. In the past three nights, Bellardini tossed 8 scoreless against Newark, Reed threw 7 scoreless against Elmira, and O’Brien threw 5 scoreless against Onondaga.
With two today, Joseph Tassin now has 6 RBI in his last two games played.
The save from Mullins was Geneva’s first recorded save on the season.
