For the fifth time in a row, the Geneva Red Wings (14-6) were winners on Sunday afternoon at McDonough Park in Geneva, New York. In this contest, they would defeat the Oneonta Outlaws (6-13) by a final score of 4-2.
The Geneva would start hot, scoring 3 runs in the first 2 innings. The first three batters would reach by way of a single in the top of the first, and an RBI groundout from Trustin Riley (University of Tampa) would put the Wings on top. In the top of the 2nd, a leadoff walk from Garrett Uhl (UT Dallas) would come around to score on an E6. Dominic Toso (Bucknell) would double home another run in the frame. This RBI extra base hit was one of four knocks that Toso had in the contest.
Things would settle after that until the sixth inning. Geneva’s starter Jordan Murphy (UT Dallas) would finish the game with a win, throwing 5.1 innings and giving up a lone earned run. In the top of the sixth, an RBI single from Michael Brown (Dartmouth) would make the score 3-1. A few batters later, an E5 would make the score 3-2.
Oneonta’s starter Nathan Wrighter (Bryant) would right the ship for a 7.0 inning outing, but would be slated with the loss. Another run of insurance was added for the Wings in the bottom of the 8th on an RBI double from Justin Barr (Central Alabama CC).
The Wings’ bullpen would combine for 3.2 innings of relief, only giving up an unearned run. Brent Holcombe (Bossier Parish CC) came in to get 2 outs in the 6th, Ben Terwilliger (Maine) pitched a couple of scoreless innings, and Colby Mullins (Andrew College) slammed the door and earned a save.
The Red Wings are 14-6 on the season, and will face off against the Onondaga Flames in a doubleheader at McDonough Park on Monday afternoon. The first game is scheduled for 2 PM, and Alex Bellardini (Youngstown State) will be on the hill.
