The Utica Blue Sox defeated the Geneva Red Wings 11-5 on Monday behind some heavy offense that started early in the game.
Utica put up five runs in the first inning, beginning with an RBI single by Tyler Simon. A of couple batters later, LJ Bryant’s base hit would make it 2-0.
During the next at-bat, first baseman Trevor Rogers was unable to catch a pickoff throw allowing Luis Deleon to score from third.
Later in the inning, Zach Heming hit a blooper to right field that was misplayed by Kross Grundy and scored two more runs making it 5-0 Utica.
The Red Wings would answer back in the bottom half of the 1st. Trevor Rogers hit a single that would score Trey Younger, as the throw home was high for an error by Simon.
Leo Wells hit a sacrifice fly to score Grundy making it 5-2 Utica.
In the 2nd, the Blue Sox would pick up where they left off. Tyler Simon hit a sacrifice fly to score Gabe Sherman. Shortly after, Vincenzo Castronovo hit an RBI single.
The Blue Sox’ two-out rally would continue when Castronovo stole second and a wild throw by catcher Seth Hojnacki would allow him to keep running home, giving Utica an 8-2 lead.
In the bottom of the 2nd, Brainy Rojas hit a double scoring Jason Dumont. Later, Kross Grundy hit a two-RBI double cutting the deficit to three, 8-5.
Utica would add some insurance runs in the 7th, starting with a two-RBI double by Bryant. Ben Montenegro then hit a single to score Bryant making it 11-5 Utica.
