EXTRA INNINGS THRILLER ENDS IN TIE

GENEVA, NY- The Red Wings returned home for a short two-game homestand this weekend, with the Auburn Doubledays first on their schedule.

Jake Short was dominant in relief, going 6.1 innings and striking out 6.

What would become a back-and-forth game all night would come down to the very end. The Doubledays would come out swinging, scoring 2 runs in the 1st inning. However, the Red Wings would quickly answer with 2 runs of their own. An Aiken Santana single would bring home Jaden Madrid to score one. Santana would then cause a rundown that would help Michael Ucci reach home safely, while Santana successfully stole second.

The 4th inning would see more action. The Doubledays would add 2 runs, and the Red Wings matched it with three of their own. The Doubledays pitcher would throw a plethora of wild pitches that would cause three Red Wings base runners to reach home safely and give Geneva a 5-4 lead. The Doubledays, however, would match the Red Wings' scoring with 3 runs to begin the 5th inning.

The Red Wings would add one more run in the 7th inning, but the Doubledays would match it heading into the bottom of the 8th. The Red Wings would look to rally back in the 9th inning. A Casey Burcroff sacrifice fly would tie the game at 8-8. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th, the Red Wings could not muster up the winning run, however. The game would head into the 10th inning, and the heroics of Jake Short would stop the Doubledays in their tracks. Short had an outstanding night on the mound, pitching 6.1 innings and striking out 6 Doubledays’ batters.

With new life, the Red Wings would bunt pinch runner Jordan Perry to third and look to walk it off in the bottom of the 10th. Elijiah Benton would hit a ball high and far into center field, looking to set up a sacrifice fly, but the Doubledays centerfielder would make a seemingly impossible throw to make a play at the plate and end the game in a tie.

Geneva’s two-game homestand ends Sunday at 5 pm against their bitter rivals, the Newark Pilots.
